The challenges single moms’ face can be without a doubt difficult, stressful, and can have a huge effect on finances. College is a massive factor in improving someone’s life, but the cost can mean single moms shy away from the idea. There are lots of options available, college financial aid for single moms can make your dreams come true – the effect college can have on a single mom’s life is undoubtedly hugely positive, and will ultimately improve their income, meaning they can bring up their child, and still enjoy the better things in life.

The option may not be visible to many single moms, even though there is help out there. But, how exactly does a single mom find financial aid?

The first step to getting college financial aid for single moms is to fill in a FAFSA. FAFSA is a “Free Application For Federal Student Aid”. Before applying, it’s good to have certain documents ready – this will include a Social Security Number, Driver’s License, Income Tax Returns, Bank Statements and Investment Records. Once those documents have been gathered, simply visit http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ , where you’ll be able to create an online application. You will also have to have your parents details at the ready, too.

Once you have submitted your application, the next step is to approve and sign your application. There are two ways of doing this. The first option is electronically – FAFSA send you a Personal Identification Number (PIN), which you’ll submit online to verify. The second option is by mailing in a signature page. Please note your parents will also have to sign.

College financial aid for single moms is only available to those who meet certain criteria. For example, if you are financially secure, your application may well be denied – the same can apply to your parents. If you feel you should be eligible for College financial aid for single moms, even though your application was denied, you will have to prove to the financial officer that you really do need the money; this process will include filling out an ”Application of repeal” form.

After the application approval process, you then have to chose an institution who will take responsibility in lending you the finance. It’s very common for individuals to chose a national institution that specialize in college financial aid for single moms, however, you do have the option of using your local bank. The financial institution will have their own application process, ensuring that you will take full responsibility in paying back the finances lent. If you are unable to pay back the amount, you may have your credit score lowered, paychecks garnished, and state or federal government tax refunds held back as payment.

Private Scholarship/Grant Programs for Students

Please note there are also so private assistance programs out there. If you are a single parent looking for private funding — i.e. non-government grants and scholarships — there are some programs of interest. If you are a mom, you can apply for the 10k Scholarship for Moms. This is a scholarship giveaway program: each month, one mom is chosen to win 10,000 dollars towards their education. It’s free to sign up and takes only a couple minutes. For those single dads out there wanting to go back to school, there’s some love for you too. There is a similar program to that of the mom scholarship. You can apply for the 10k Scholarship 4 Dads. It’s similar to the 10k scholarship for mothers — but you must be a dad to apply.

There are other aid programs you can look at too (as per the title of the article). Here is a list.

For example there are many grants for people looking to start a small business, which can be a great help if you have a good idea. A small business is not easy to run but it can offer financial freedom as well as flexibility, especially in terms of your schedule. In essence, you will be your own boss and working from home will also allow you plenty of time to spend with your child.

The biggest advantage over a grant compared to loans, and other different types of lending products, is that you aren’t required to pay the money back nor will you be charged any interest. If you find yourself in need of housing, there are many budget apartments for single moms available through the HUD public housing program. This program is offered by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development and includes many types of housing units, from single-family houses to apartments. Local housing agencies receive Federal aid, and they manage these housing developments, so that they can be offered to low income families at rents they can afford. There are currently about 1.2 million families living in HUD public housing.

Your eligibility is determined mainly according to your annual gross income, as well as according to any special circumstances such as a single parent family with a low income. The income limits are set by the HUD and they consider a low income to be 80% of the median income for the area and a very low income to be 50%. Just the fact that their calculated according to the average income by area, income limits vary, and you may find you qualify with one housing agency but not another. Therefore it is very important for you to research these limits so that you can find a housing agency that can help you, even if it’s not in the exact area you want to live. The benefits of these budget apartments for single moms far outweigh the inconveniences of moving to another area, unless of course this affects your ability to find employment or childcare. Even so, you should contact your local housing agency to discuss your options, because they do want to help you. That’s why they’re there.

The HUD public housing program is ideal for single mothers with low incomes, because the rent is calculated according to a formula that uses your income as the base. The total tenant payment (TTP), as the rent is referred to, is the highest of the following:

  1. 30% of your monthly adjusted income, which represents your annual income, minus the deductions allowed by regulations;
  2. 10% of your monthly income;
  3. welfare rent; or.
  4. A minimum rent of $25 or higher, up to a maximum of $50, set by a housing agency.

When applying, you will have to supply information regarding your expected income for the next 12 months, contact information for your employers, banks and other information that the housing agency will need to be able to verify your income and deductions, contact information for your landlord to deem whether you are a suitable tenant or not, and any other documentation that may be requested of you. You may also find that a representative of the housing agency may visit you and your family to see how you care for your current home.

You must remember, though, that there is a long waiting list for public housing, so to increase your chances of being offered an apartment, you should apply to more than one housing agency. Another advantage to this program of budget apartments for single moms and other types of low-income families is that you may live there as long as you comply with the lease and until your income is sufficient to obtain private housing.
